Going in the right direction…

Posted on Wednesday, November 9, 2011

Last week when I was in Düsseldorf I wanted to go from Golzheimer Platz to Nordpark /Aquazoo.  Aparently an easy task for a savvy city rat like myself. After living in some many countries with very different subway systems, I was expecting to simply follow the map and get there. However this is what I encountered:

At a first glance I thought to myself “this is the wrong train”. To my surprise it was indeed the right one. In case you are wondering what’s wrong with this picture, I would ask you to look at it again.

The Good Old Face-to-Face

The rise of Online as a marketing channel is undeniable and unstoppable. This also applies to the media, which decision makers in the B-2-B realm use to inform themselves – and to do business. Ninety-eight percent of German managers are online, 50 percent have smartphones, enabling them to get online wherever they are.

The Art of Storytelling

“So, what’s the story?”

I couldn’t believe my editor’s question. A cub reporter on a small-town newspaper’s science beat, I had just submitted what I trusted to be a first-rate feature: A team of researchers at the local university had developed a new type of stent that might revolutionize heart surgery.  The stakes were high, the technology fascinating, the benefits considerable.

How could this not be a story?

Picking up on my confusion, the grizzled newspaperman rephrased his question: “Where are the people? Where is the action?”

The Art of Writing

Posted on Tuesday, March 29, 2011

I take my hat off to the Threeview writers. Their art is not an easy one.  We have a handfull here, led by Alex Handcock, Threeview’s Editorial Manager. At any given time they are pushing out copy for clients including the EPO, Atlas Copco, Linde, Allianz, and about a half-dozen others.

The reason for my rant now? I am for the first time in six years working on a research paper of my own. And I gotta say it is harder than I remember. To write well, one has to get a fair amount of knowledge on the topic at hand. This comes through research and interviews and a number of other fact-gathering exercises. Try writing without enough knowledge, and you will end up staring at a blank computer screen. You will get nowhere.
