“So, what’s the story?”
I couldn’t believe my editor’s question. A cub reporter on a small-town newspaper’s science beat, I had just submitted what I trusted to be a first-rate feature: A team of researchers at the local university had developed a new type of stent that might revolutionize heart surgery. The stakes were high, the technology fascinating, the benefits considerable.
How could this not be a story?
Picking up on my confusion, the grizzled newspaperman rephrased his question: “Where are the people? Where is the action?”
